Hawke Forestry explores the benefits of Syntropic Agroforestry, where we cultivate rare tropical fruits and sustainable crops for a healthier planet.
The Hawke Forestry mission is to grow food in the most sustainable ways using proven ecological science. Cultivating resilient food systems, combating environmental issues, and fighting hunger, we teach and help others to do the same, so people can maximize their resources. We share the knowledge and provide solutions to maximize food growth in the home, office, yard or on any land.
I come from a long line of gardeners and learned how to work with the land from my grandparents.
With both parents who study and teach nature skills, I continue to pursue my own education as a university student, currently pursuing a Bachelors in Environmental Studies.
My passion is learning specifically about the more exotic rare fruit species globally. As deforestation runs rampant and so much earth turns barren, many rare species are lost. Being witness to this destruction all my life I feel it’s a duty to do all I can to preserve these genetics in danger of being lost forever.
From health benefits, what can be grown in your region, sharing the species specific knowledge, to teaching techniques and fruits of our labor.
Most of us have seen the negative effects of careless development, in one way or another. In these rapidly changing times where the environment is anything but stable, it sometimes feels like there is a near infinite list of problems. However, there is hope in the form of climate smart food systems. We may not be able to halt the clearing of land by those who take more than they need, but by reforesting what has already been taken away we can help fight back.
So, what exactly is a FoodForest?
Food forests are a climate smart food system, they utilize select species and can be adapted to any region. Food forests are essentially exactly as the name reads; a forest planted but with only edible or medicinal species. Select species are planted to resemble a forest, with multiple layers of food producing plants. For example, grape vines or beans growing up fruit tree trunks, a shaded understory crop of squash and melon, root crops like cassava and sweet potatoes in the ground below, and so on. A complete food system, interconnected and thriving.
Food Forests systems sequester carbon at almost twice the rate of a monoculture, they provide a home for regional fauna, provide for the community, and so much more. As the elite get richer and the poor get poorer; growing your own food takes power back into your hands. There are so many reasons to want to start growing your own food and medicine, here at Hawke Forestry we provide a helping hand.
